Should be 1-1.5 pages in length. Around 750-800 words. Paper may be personalized but generally includes: 1. a compelling intro with a personal story, 2. why this specialty (mine is internal medicine) including experiences that have solidified my desire, highlighting skills, values, traits I bring to the table. 3. My unique qualities, lessons learned, challenges I overcame (why they would want me) 4. What I am looking for in a program, future goals (I’m interested in critical care medicine) and thanks for considering my application. I am attaching my most up-to-date version but I am hoping to enlist your services to help curate it into a compelling statement that highlights myself and who I am as an applicant. (I received feedback on a prior version of my statement as distant and not vulnerable. My personal struggles include battling mental health struggles due to abuse during my childhood- which I do NOT want to include. Another struggle is my 17 year old dog passing during my surgery rotation. I wrote another version that included this personal challenge of balancing grief and clinical duties but I don’t know that I would like to include as it was very painful and more than a pet to me because she was with me for my childhood, and I personally know people that have lost a parent so I don’t want it to give the wrong impression. However I would consider it if you think it’s needed. I am providing these details for context of why I am having trouble highlighting myself in my statement. I do not have any failed exams or rotations but I was waitlisted during my first application cycle. I have pretty much always wanted to be a doctor and am nerdy, I love learning for fun, which makes it a lil harder than having a story where my passion for medicine came out of no where haha. I truly value treating others with kindness and respect. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or clarification.
