The Why: The purpose of this assignment is to consider what is necessary to formulate a comprehensive assessment of an individual with substance abusing behavior.

The Hope: Gain experience and confidence with conducting BPSS assessment with an individual that has substance abusing behavior.

Description of Assignment: Pick a fictional character that has substance abusing behavior. You will write a paper discussing considerations that you would want to use when doing a Bio-psycho-sociocultural-spiritual assessment (BPSS). In past semesters, students often will choose a character from a tv series since that lends to more information and character development for use in your assessment.

Task: In your paper, discuss the following:

What dimensions would you include in the assessment and brief statement of why you chose that dimension.
What questions or screening tools would you ask/use to assess the different dimensions during the assessment process?
Describe who you would include in the assessment process and for what purpose.
Based on the assessment, how would you and client define their problem? This may differ. If it does, discuss this conflict and potential impact on therapeutic relationship. How can you move toward agreeable plan.
Based on the assessment, where is the client in regard to stages of change?
In developing a case formulation, what would be your initial recommendations for diagnosis, intervention, techniques to facilitate development of attainable goals and commitment to the therapeutic process. (this paper does not have to include a full intervention plan YET).
Your paper should be about 5 pages in length (it does not have to be double spaced or in APA format) and needs to include headings.

I have included the textbook, which we are out of chapters 3,4, and 5 and lecture PowerPoints. I have also included two example papers that were excellent for the instructor. Lastly, I included several assessment tools for your reference, if you chose to use any of them.

Choose a character that can be built on on future papers. I will use you for the remainder of the semester if you’re willing and knock this paper out of the park! Please reach out if you have any questions at all.
