Let’s begin thinking about Project 1! Project 1, a four-page paper (at least 1000 words) is due on Thursday, Sept. 26. If you’d like to use an alternative format (a video or recorded presentation), you must meet with me to discuss and plan this project prior to September 17. If you don’t meet with me by September 17, you need to write the paper. Potential topics: Discuss how one theme or idea in the Iliad relates to your own lived experience. Choose from one of the following: “saving face,” loyalty, leadership, grief, the battle to decide one’s personal destiny, or the codes of conduct/behavior. Define what that idea meant in the ancient Greek world (use library research here) and what it means to you today. Discuss that idea in detail by: Using experiences from your own life, and then Comparing those experiences to specific moments in the poem. Use at least three specific quotations from the poem in your essay. Write a paper about how certain types of poetry used in the ancient world are still present in our contemporary society (oral-formulaic poetry, spoken poetry, poetry handed down from generation to generation, wisdom literature, etc.). You’ll need to do some library research first and then connect that research to your own experience of poetry or oral storytelling. Write a paper that explores the connection between celebrity culture (in sports, Hollywood, or music) and the ancient Greek hero. What does it mean to be “the best” and what is the cost? How might that relate to Achilles? Be sure to use Prof. Nagy’s ideas describing heroes as “doubly exceptional” as part of your research. Perform a deep dive into the Iliad and theories of PTSD from combat; then, write a paper that makes connections between the epic and today’s soldiers. Feel free to use our reading by Dr. Shay as a source. A topic of your choice (cleared with me first) Your essay or project must include: An introduction containing a central thesis statement and a corresponding plan for discussion; A body of analysis that References specific quotations or lines of text in the epic or text (in translation), and Refers to at least two library academic secondary sources; A conclusion; and A Work Cited page in MLA format. Note on sources: Feel free to use the headnotes (the introduction prior to the poem in your textbook) as ONE source. At least ONE source must come from the library databases. That means you can choose to use your textbook notes plus one library source and not be stressed about whether your sources are OK. The poetry itself is a primary source, not a secondary source. AI does not count as a library source, and, if used, must be cited or you will be flagged for academic dishonesty. Check with me if you have questions about sources. Your essay should contain no spelling or grammar errors and should be typed in MLA format. A template for the MLA format is attached to this assignment. All work will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin.com software before grading.
