Discussion 1 (Danielle):
Interpersonal communication can be achieved through several factors in the practice environment to improve patient outcomes. The development of the strategies can be applied to the acquisition of nursing expertise and to the assertion of leadership in the practice environment.
The different strategies are from the entry level domains listed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2022), and are from 6.3a, b, c to reflect interpersonal partnership and 10.2c, d, e to reflect on personal, professional and leadership development.
According to AACN (2022), for optimal care delivery interpersonal partnerships implements unique knowledge, skills and beliefs of the full team by understanding team dynamics. The use of nursing and professional knowledge to address healthcare needs requires collaboration roles and responsibilities integration, leverage the ability and roles of the team members for optimal care, and clarification of roles and responsibilities with the team members in execution of the plan of care (AACN, 2022). Interpersonal communication is dynamic and is in constant motion throughout the stay of the patient and between each member of the team and according to Weiss et al. (2019), each person influences the process of communication by holding different roles and unique ways and process of communication effecting the outcome. Effective communication is important for the outcome of patient, and families, care staff and professionals involved in the patient’s care needs to be able to communicate any change in status of the patient, such as family may know the baseline of the patient before an illness, nurses can notice a trend of improvement or decrease in conditions. Any changes or no change needs to be made clear to the physician.
According to AACN (2022), personal, professional, and leadership development requires personal growth, expanding the personal expertise and knowledge along with a various leadership context, and by doing so by fosters flexibility and maturity professionally with a sense of inquiry. There will need to be a commitment to professional and personal development, expansion of knowledge to update clinical judgment, and to seek out mentors and role models for professional growth (AACN, 2022). Leadership needs to be aware of their practice environment and need to understand team effectiveness. According to Weiss et al. (2019), clinical expertise for a leader is important to be able to evaluate and develop the skills of others on the team and to be able to effectively appraise patient outcomes. To be able to increase clinical expertise is with improving personal and professional knowledge and following a mentor in a leadership position. The assertion of leadership is to provide access to learning and development of skills such as workshops or cross training to different areas of interest for staff members. It is in the best interest of the patient and to ensure optimal outcomes for the patient if communication is effective for all individuals involved and to have to most up to date clinical knowledge.
Discussion 2 (Melinda):
Proficiency in a nurse personal, professional and leadership development grows in these three areas. Progress of the nurse as an individual who is strong, responsive and adapts to uncertainty and change. The professional development is the nurse’s responsibility for lifelong learning and oneself refection. A leader is a nurse who uses proficient in asserting control, influence, and power in their professional and personal situations. This in return allows for advocacy for the patients on all nurses. These all require growth in one’s personal growth, professional growth and leadership growth (American Association of Colleges of nursing, 2024). Nurses must demonstrate healthy, self-care behaviors that promote health and resiliency. Nurses should be able to resolve conflict with personal and professional responsibilities. Demonstrate self-awareness of their own bias and their relationship to one’s culture and environment.
Interprofessional partnerships are built on values, ethics and shared responsibilities. Nurses communicate with clarity and roles. Nurses engage in constructive communication to help conflicts. Nurses promote an environment that advances interprofessional learning (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2024).
Interpersonal communication is a process that gives people the opportunity to reflect, construct personal knowledge, and develop a sense of collective knowledge about others (Wiess et al., 2019 p. 100). When speaking with interpersonal teams the nurse should consider the language that is spoken such as their understanding of medical terminology. This ensures the team to clear collaboration to increase quality of care and expected outcomes. When the nurse is listening to the interoperation team, they must consider their roles in their jobs to help patient outcomes. Nurses should communicate with others to improve the patients’ cultures and work together for their care. When communicating with the tea nurses should use introduction, situation, background, assessment, recommendations and readback (ISBARR). This allows other provider to gain the full picture of the situation and helps with comprehension to improve optimal patient outcomes. Working together in teams provides safety for patients. Communicating with respect, values, ethics, open ended questions, patient center care and quality of care will increase patient’s outcomes (Wiess et al., 2019).
It is important for nurses to use their expertise, leadership skills and a healthy environment within the unit to resolve conflicts that occur. An example is two nurses feel degraded over different nursing practicing styles. A leader will communicate assertively without taking side or providing their input. The leader will communicate to help resolve the conflict. Nurses with good leadership roles will enhance their environment to be functional and healthy. Nurse’s will keep their own bias out of being a professional. Communication will be clear, ethical, fair and added values to promote an open communication within the unit. Nurses must demonstrate healthy, self-care behaviors that promote health and resiliency. Promoting health is done with communication and by self-care behaviors such as being professional and using their expertise on health. Nurses are resilience as they display growth over time and allows for advocacy for themselves and patients.
