Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage. CASE STUDY 1 You are a senior leader at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) in rural upstate New York. Like many rural hospitals, CMH has faced a significant financial deficit since the Affordable Care Act was instituted in 2010. The COVID-19 pandemic magnified and multiplied challenges for CMH. Remaining a stand-alone hospital is no longer financially feasible, and CMH has just released the following statement to the press: Community Memorial Hospital has signed a definitive agreement to merge with Northern Health of Monroe, Michigan. Northern Health leaders expect the deal to close this summer. Once the merger is complete, the 154-bed, nonprofit stand-alone hospital will benefit from the system’s expertise in creating operating efficiencies and enhancing clinical excellence and it will gain greater access to capital resources, according to a press release. Northern Health has 85 hospitals, 130 continuing care facilities, and home health and hospice programs in 21 states. You knew the announcement was coming and there have been rumblings about the merger amongst employees. Once the news is out, however, your phone starts blowing up with concerned employees and community members. In other rural communities, when Northern has acquired hospitals, they have cut jobs, consolidated or reduced services, and the change has resulted in decreased patient satisfaction. Many are concerned that CMH will lose that sense of “community.” Further, the merger could mean that certain health services will be moved out of CMH to other Northern Health-affiliated entities that are hours away. This is not the first merger/acquisition that you have been a part of. Prior to joining CMH, you were involved in a similar merger. You recognize that the idea of a merger is often a “pie in the sky” vision and in all reality, the larger entity subsumes the smaller, finically-strapped entity. While you know that your job is safe for now, if the two organizations cannot fully integrate, the merger has a high likelihood of failure. And if you cannot help to navigate some of the challenges, then your job could be in danger. You have a staff meeting with your team coming up in a few days and will make the merger the only topic on the agenda. Your leadership skills will certainly be tested over the coming days, weeks, and months! Note: This case study could have been written about the merger of two airlines (when Continental merged with United, for example) or two for-profit companies (when Elon Musk bought Twitter/X, for example). The context does not matter and you don’t need to know the intricacies of running a hospital. Rather, you are being asked to think about your response as a leader and to apply aspects of the leadership theories and approaches we’ve been thinking about. Assignment specifications: In your written case study analysis, address the following questions: How would you summarize the leadership challenge at hand? (2 pts) What should you do to prepare for your upcoming staff meeting? Is there anyone you should consult? (2pts) What kind of leader do you want to be during this challenging time? Be specific about which leadership theory(s)/styles from the SSC 390 course content will guide you. Use the language of the theory. What kind of leader do you not want to be? (4 points) What is your preferred outcome? What do you have to do to reach those goals? (2pts) Points will be awarded based on the quality and completeness of your responses.
